Sorry Haters! Scientists From Oregon State University Proved That Cats Are Actually Friendly!

For all those people that believe that cats are not friendly nor nice, we have some surprising news. A scientific study from Oregon State University, published in Behavioral Processes shows that contrary to popular belief cats are in fact nice.

In fact, the study concluded, cats like interacting with humans more than they like eating food. Let that sink in: more than food.

“Increasingly cat cognition research is providing evidence of their complex socio-cognitive and problem-solving abilities,” the authors wrote in the paper. “Nonetheless, it is still common belief that cats are not especially sociable or trainable. This disconnect may be due, in part, to a lack of knowledge of what stimuli cats prefer, and thus may be most motivated to work for.”

The scientists from Oregon State University conducted their research with 50 cats. Some of the cats were already adopted and lived in happy families while others were from a shelter.

Besides that little difference, all of them reacted the same.

The cats were not around food, humans nor toys for a couple of hours. They were presented with the four stimuli food, human socialization, scent, and toys. Around 50% of them chose human socialization over everything else.

“While it has been suggested that cat sociality exists on a continuum, perhaps skewed toward independency,” the authors wrote, “we have found that 50% of cats tested preferred interaction with the social stimulus even though they had a direct choice between social interaction with a human and their other most preferred stimuli from the three other stimulus categories.”

This research basically shows us that cats would choose us over food and we all know how much they love to munch on things.
